When people talk about Redz Scratch Kitchen, the conversation usually starts with the food. Fresh house-made pasta, braised beef short-rib, scratch-made sauces, and a dessert menu worth staying for. But the moment you walk through the door, the space earns just as much of the conversation. As the commercial renovator on this Red Deer project, Ross Contracting took the client's vision and brought it to life with precision craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. The result is a restaurant interior that sets the tone for the entire dining experience, and one of the most visually striking spaces we have had the privilege of building in Central Alberta.
What It Takes to Be a Commercial Renovator for a Restaurant in Red Deer
A restaurant renovation is one of the most demanding commercial builds a contractor can take on. Every element has to serve both form and function: the ambiance has to draw guests in, but the space also has to hold up under daily use, handle the practical demands of a busy service environment, and meet all applicable codes and inspections.
At Ross Contracting, we treat every commercial build with the same level of care we bring to a custom home. That means thinking through material choices, layout flow, structural details, and finishing work all at once, and coordinating trades efficiently so the project comes in on time and on budget.
The Redz Scratch Kitchen renovation gave our team the opportunity to work at a high level across all of those areas, and the finished space shows it.
A First Impression Built to Last
The entry sets the tone immediately. A soaring double-height vaulted space greets guests at the door, with deep red walls climbing up and across the ceiling, contrasted against black beadboard paneling and black-trimmed windows that flood the space with natural light. A ceiling fan overhead and glass-paneled entry doors complete a dramatic arrival sequence that feels polished without being pretentious.
Just inside, a curved host stand finished in natural wood slats anchors the entry, and a full floor-to-ceiling glass-enclosed wine display stretches along one wall, showcasing hundreds of bottles and acting as both a functional cellar and a statement piece. Exposed black brick columns frame the transition between entry and dining room, giving the space a sense of structure and weight that carries throughout the interior.
A Dining Room Designed for Atmosphere

Step further inside and the design deepens. The dining room balances warmth and drama in a way that makes the space feel equally suited to a casual weeknight dinner or a special occasion.
Rich red tufted leather banquettes line one side of the room, paired with black tables and gold arc lamps that cast warm light across the seating. On the other side, dark leather chairs and green upholstered seating add depth and variety without breaking the cohesion of the palette. Black brick columns divide the dining room into defined zones while keeping the overall space open and connected.
One of the most striking individual pieces in the room is a live-edge wood communal table with a black epoxy river running through the centre. Sourced to complement the overall design vision, it is the kind of detail that stops guests mid-step, and it speaks to the thoughtfulness behind every decision made in this renovation.
Overhead, the ceiling is finished in ornate embossed tile panels painted a deep matte black. The texture adds richness to the room and gives the space a sense of age and character that feels earned rather than manufactured.
The Bar: A Feature Worth the Trip Alone
The bar at Redz Scratch Kitchen is a destination within the destination. The standout feature is the backlit stone wall behind the bar, a large-format slab with the kind of movement and depth that comes from natural onyx or agate. Backlit from behind, the warm amber, cream, and rust tones glow against the dark surroundings and create a focal point that anchors the entire bar area.
Dark open shelving holds the bottle display on either side, and vinyl tile floors carry through from the dining room, tying the full space together. The bar is finished with a steel counter and a chrome draft tower, balancing the warmth of the stone feature with industrial edge.
